Evolution at Two Levels in Humans and Chimpanzees. Science 188, 107-116
| King M.-C., Wilson, A. C. (1975).
| After the expansion of molecular biology in the 1950's a "common yardstick" for measuring the degree of genetic differenc among species was found: comparing the DNA base sequences of various species. The results from comparing humans and chimpanzees with different biochemical methods agree that the genetic distance between humans and the chimpanzee is probably too small to account for their substantial organismal differences. These results were found to be consistent with newer results from sequence comparisons. It is suggested that the evolutionary changes in anatomy and way of life are more often based on changes in the mechanisms controlling the expression of genes than on sequence changes in proteins.
