| Complex human societies have existed for at least five millenia. Like modern society, these civilizations have depended on agriculture. Humans control, and use for their benefit, almost half of the wolrd's land surface. The long-term sustainability, stability and productivity of agriculture requires that the full biodiversity of plan and animal crop germplasm is preserved and that the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and agricultural landscapes is conserved, by maintaining large blocks of land in native ecosystems.
