| Oilseed rape plants containing a herbicide tolerance transgene under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter were infected with CaMV. Oilseed rape is susceptible to CaMV, but plants recover form the infection. In this case, the CaMV infections altered the expression of the herbicide tolerance gene so that plants became susceptible to the herbicide. This susceptibility is most likely a result of transcriptional gene silencing of the transgene, triggered as a plant defense mechanism by invading viruses. The degree of transgene suppression depended upon the virulence of the virus variants, with CaMV variants of intermediate severity acting most effectively.
