| Reports of herbicide-resistant weeds have increased exponentially over the past 3 years. Factors that influence the rate of evolution of herbicide resistance include the initial frequency of resistant alleles in the population, the relative fitness of resistant genotypes in the presence and absence of herbicide, the mating system of the weed and the inheritance of resistance. It can be delayed by management practices that alter the selection pressure placed on the population.
