Transgenic plants as factories for biopharmaceuticals. Nature Biotechnology 18, 1151-1155
| Giddings G., Allison, G., Brooks, D., Carter, A. (2000).
| Plants have a high potential for producing biopharmaceutical proteins because they are easily transformed and provide a cheap source of protein. Product purification might be an expensive process and different methods are being developed to overcome this problem. One way might be to directly ingest the modified plant. Such biopharmaceuticals and edible vaccines can be stored and distributed as seeds, tubers or fruits, making immunization programs in developing countires cheaper and easier to administer. One transgenic plant-derived biopharmaceutical, hirudin, is now being commercially produced in Canada for the first time.
