Frequency of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis in field populations of pink bollworm. PNAS 97, 12980-12984
| Tabashnik B., Patin, AL, Dennehy, TJ, Liu, Y, Carriere, Y, Sims,MA, Antilla, L (2000).
| Laboratory bioassays of susceptibility to Cry1Ac of field-derived strains of pink bollworm and an indirect approach, based on the relative abundance of live pink bollworm in field-collected bolls of Bt cotton and non-Bt cotton from fields in Arizona, show that the frequency of an allele conferring resistance to Bt cotton was surprisingly high at 0.16. Both approaches indicate that the frequendy of resistance did not increase in 1998 to 1999, eventhough, more than half of the >100,000 hectares of cotton grown in Arizona in 1997, 1998 and 1999 was Bt cotton. It is speculated that this might be due to the slower development of resistant pink bollworms on Bt cotton relative to non-Bt cotton and that the fitness cost of this resistance in the field reduced overwintering ability.
