Agricultural biotechnology: benefits of transgenic soybeans (National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy).
Gianessi L.P., Carpenter, Janet, E. (2000).
Weeds are the major pest problem when growing soybeans; before the introduction of herbicides, soybean growers made many trips across fields with cultivators, and yet, about 17% of national production was lost to weeds. Since herbicides are more effective than non-chemical controls, soybean yields increased dramatically as growers switched to them and reduced tillage operations. , U.S. growers have planted genetically engineered, herbicide tolerant soybean varieties primarily because the weed control is less complicated and a broader spectrum of weeds can be controlled, while crop injury is reduced. There is more flexibility in the timing of treatments and less concern of carryover to rotational crops. In addition, the herbicide tolerant soybeans and associated herbicides were priced competitively with existing herbicide programs for soybeans. Overall, U.S. growers saved approximately $220 million in 1998 due to lower herbicide costs and, compared to 1995, made 16 million fewer herbicide active ingredient applications. A 19% reduction occurred in the number of herbicide active ingredient applications made to the average treated soybean acre.
