Grain, potato and vegetable production in organic farming: Results from yield recordings in the 30 farm-project. Norsk Landbruksforsking 8, 177-187.
Kerner K.N. (1994).
Yields of organically grown grains, potatoes and vegetables were recorded on 22 of the farms participating in the "30 farm-project" in the period 1989-92. Of a total of 231 recordings, 73 were carried out in grains, 82 in potatoes, and 76 in various vegetables, carrot being the vegetable crop most often recorded. Yields were determined as gross yields by harvesting 5 control plots pr. field. In potatoes and vegetables the control plots measured 5 meters times 2 rows, in grains each plot measured 1 m-2. The farmers' records of the amount of manure spread showed that on average grains received 25 t/ha, potatoes 22 t/ha and vegetables 31 t/ha. The average grain yield for the 4-year period was 3.7 t/ha. Compared with yields in conventional agriculture, the organic grain yields were 20-25% lower. Organic potato yields averaged 25 t/ha with only small yearly variations. Organic carrot yields averaged 40 than but varied considerably from year to year. In discussing the results, it is important to take into account the structure of most contemporary organic farms in Norway. These are predominately versatile family farms based on dairy production as the main income. So far, only few farms have specialized on growing a limited number of cash crops.
