| The estimated global area of transgenic crops for 2000 is 44.2 million hectares or 109.2 million acres, which is equivalent to almost twice the area of the United Kingdom. The increase in area of transgenic crops between 1999 and 2000 is 11;, the number of countries growing transgenic crops increased from 12 to 13. Transgenic soybeans retained its position as the crop occupying the largest area (58%) and the highest adoption rate globally: 36% of the soybeans planted globally are transgenic.
